Intertek is an OSHA (Occupational Safety & Health Administration) recognized NRTL (Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory) and is accredited as a Testing Organization and Certification Body by the Standards Council of Canada. The ETL Listed Mark from Intertek is proof of product compliance (electrical, gas and other safety standards) to North American safety standards. Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJ’s) in 50 states and Canada and retailers accept the ETL Listed Mark as proof of product safety.
What is UL Certification?
Underwriters Laboratories Inc. (UL) is an independent product safety certification organization. UL develops standards and test procedures for products, materials, components, assemblies, tools and equipment, chiefly dealing with product safety. UL 499 is the safety standard set for electrical heating appliances such as tankless water heaters. Consumers should check to be sure the electric tankless water heater they are contemplating buying is certified UL and not just compliant with UL standards. UL certified products undergo strict safety testing ensure safety compliance.
What is CSA Certification?
CSA exists to develop standards. Among the fifty seven different areas of specialization is safety and performance standards including those for electrical and electronic equipment. Most standards are voluntary, meaning there's no laws requiring their application. Despite that, adherence to standards is beneficial to companies and consumers because it shows products have been independently tested to meet certain standards.
Energy Efficiency Standards
Energy Star is the international standard for energy efficient consumer products. Currently, there is no path for electric tankless water heaters to become certified through Energy Star. Standards for gas tankless water heaters have been established for Energy Star, however, the electric tankless water heater industry, until recently, has been very under represented in the legislative process. ECOSMART is part of the Coalition for Energy Efficient Tankless Water heaters which was formed in March of 2010. The Coalition is on a mission to achieve ENERGY STAR Certification by educating consumers, policymakers, U.S. Government and Non-Government agencies on the energy efficient technology and savings opportunities that Electric Tankless Water Heaters can provide.
