How a pool cover can save you money on heating costs

As temperatures start to drop it becomes more and more costly to keep your outdoor pool heated. Instead of closing it up for the season, you can find ways to keep the water warm for those early fall pool parties. The combination of a cover and an environmentally friendly pool heater can keep your costs low and your pool warm.

Evaporation is the leading cause of pool energy waste and water loss.Evaporation is the leading cause of pool energy waste and water loss.

Save energy
According to the U.S. Department of Energy, the primary way in which pools loose heat is via evaporation. Air temperature, wind speed and humidity levels all contribute to the evaporation of pool water. By covering the pool when it's not in use, you can mitigate these issues. Covering your pool can stop up to six feet of water from evaporating over the course of a year, which, according to the Arizona Department of Water Resources, can be the equivalent of refilling your pool once a year. An electric pool heater can further save energy by raising the water temperature efficiently, that is, without wasting as much thermal energy.

An electric pool heater will get your water warm efficiently and the cover will keep it that way. The Arizona Department of Water resources went on to say that covers are capable of decreasing evaporation by 90 to 95 percent.

"Covers are capable of decreasing evaporation by 90 to 95 percent."

Cover up
There are several types of pool covers to consider, and the deciding factor will be different for each pool owner. For instance, you should consider how much heat your pool absorbs from the sun. Some transparent covers will still allow energy from the sun to heat the pool, while thicker vinyl covers can stop absorption by  20 to 40 percent, according to the Department of Energy. You should balance this against the benefits of the cover, which include less cleaning time and fewer chemicals to treat the water.

Save money
The long-term savings of a pool cover and an electric pool heater are well worth the initial investment. The less obvious savings include money and time spent on cleaning and the water it takes to replace the losses due to evaporation. Money saved by having an energy-efficient pool heater can't be ignored either. If you can save money and the environment at the same time, why wouldn't you? Obtaining one or both of these items is the smart thing to do.
